Habit à la Française

Embellishment, March 2023

  • After several rounds of test dyeing, the embellished border of a sari sash was colour-matched to the suit fabric

  • Embellishments were trimmed, arranged symmetrically, and appliquéd to the top fabric, backed with the toile from the first fitting

  • Leg bands and buttons for fall-front breeches were decorated with the same trim as the jacket

Habit à la Française

Graduate show

The GEorgian House, June 2023

While completing my tailoring and ladies’ wear units, I led the planning of our HND graduate show, including:

  • Liaising with house staff and models
  • Arranging site visits and rehearsal
  • Curating the playlist
  • Narrating the catwalk presentation

ROCOCO ACCESSORIES

April-May 2023

  • Rosettes were created using scraps of fabric from the jacket and leftover embellishments

  • Period shoes were created by covering and remodelling modern shoes

  • A pattern was made with scrap fabric, a cover sewn to fit and glued to the shoe and heel, and finished with brass buckles and Russian braid trim
  • Skull caps were created using fosshape to fit models’ heads, and structures created using boning and sections of plastic water bottles

  • “Powder” wigs were created by weaving and layering strips of paper, secured with electrical tape, hot glue and whip stitching

ASSISTANT WORK

Edinburgh fringe 2022

  • I first worked with Cleo Rose McCabe as costume and wardrobe assistant on 2022 Fringe First award-winning show Ode to Joy (How Gordon Got to Go to the Nasty Pig Party)

  • I helped to construct prop costume pieces, bought and returned items as instructed, and assisted in fittings and tech week

  • I independently completed daily maintenance, mending and laundry during the Fringe, and supported the stage manager’s backstage and dressing duties

ASSISTANT WORK

Hidden Door Festival, June 2023

  • I have enjoyed a continued working relationship with Cleo, this time cutting and constructing garments and consulting on design decisions for dance installation The Wanderers

  • Together we sampled quilting and padding techniques to create futuristic costumes incorporating electronics for 6 dancers

  • During the festival I was responsible for costume maintenance: laundering, mending, and replacing EL wires as required

Indigo dye Vat

April 2017

  • Since attending an eco-spectrum plant-based dyeing workshop in 2017, I have experimented with dyeing with plant extracts and wild plants

  • I set up and maintained my own live indigo vat, fed with glucose to keep it active, and experimented with various resist and dip-dye techniques

Plant Dye Printing

November 2017

  • Building on my natural dyeing practice, I experimented with printing using plant and mineral dyes

  • A printing paste was made with guar gum and iron water made from found rusty nails, and a pattern was created on mordanted calico using a wooden block wound with string and bottle caps

  • After steaming in a homemade stovetop contraption, the calico was dyed with foraged weld plants to create a rich yellow and brown print
  • A jumpsuit was made entirely of plant-based materials, using organic hemp "silk" fabric, indigo extract, and dried weld

  • Zero-waste pattern cutting techniques were used to incorporate almost the entire length of fabric

  • A few rounds of test dyeing were needed to choose the best mordant and order of over-dyeing, with care to keep detailed notes

  • The garment was over-dyed and taken up at the hem for a fresh look a year later

Personal Project

July 2022

  • A pair of stays were drafted using techniques learned from ladies' period garments made during my HND, and combined with a long, full skirt inspired by the Alexander McQueen dress shown.

  • A little punky edge was added by leaving edges unfinished and tying the waist with extra long ribbons, allowing the skirt to also be worn as a dress
